Supreme News Release: AM Best affirms Knights of
Columbus top rating
A.M.
Best affirms Knights of Columbus rating of A++ (Superior)
Order's
insurance program gets highest rating for 32nd
consecutive year
New
Haven, CT - For the 32nd consecutive year, A.M. Best
Company has assigned the Knights of Columbus its highest
financial strength rating, A++ (Superior). A.M. Best is a
worldwide rating and information agency, which conducts
in-depth analyses and issues reports about the fiscal
stability of insurance companies.
In its 2007 affirmation, A.M. Best cited the Knights of
Columbus' "strong fraternal and insurance presence
within the Catholic communities in the United States and
Canada, its strong risk-adjusted capitalization as
measured by Best's Capital Adequacy Ratio and its
consistently positive statutory operating results."
The report also pointed to the K of C's "evolving
fraternal programs in other countries such as Mexico,
Poland the Pacific Rim territories and the Philippines,
which could add to new membership growth going
forward."
Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson welcomed the A.M. Best
report and, reflecting on the Knights of Columbus' 125th
anniversary (1882-2007), said that A++ rating "is a
result of continued and fervent adherence to our original
mission of providing Catholic families with security and
stability through top quality life insurance
products." During the past decade, the amount K of C
insurance in force has doubled to nearly $64 billion.
The Knights of Columbus is an international fraternal
benefit society and the world's largest lay Catholic
organization with more than 1.7 million members.
Last year members of the Knights of Columbus donated more
than 68 million hours of volunteer service for charitable
causes, and contributed more than $143 million to
charity.

Dear
Wayne, Ron, Les, Bob and Knights and Ladies,
I want to personally thank you all for your generous
support of time and assistance with helping us pack up
Serra House on Saturday. I can not thank you enough
for all that you do on behalf the Church and for the
Seminarians. It is such an honor for me to be a
fourth degree knight and you continue to amaze me.
Could you please extend my gratitude to Mike, Joyce, Pat
and everyone who was involved with the day. It went
extremely well and it was a joyous but sad day as we
celebrated mass with Bishop and Fr. Tony (the last Mass
at Serra as we know it) and then processed all the
religious articles out of the Chapel. The
packing went very smoothly.
Thank You Again and I assure you of my prayers.
Peace and Blessings!

Supreme News Release: Knights of Columbus sets
new records for charity
Knights of Columbus Sets New Records
for Charitable Giving, Volunteer Service
New
Haven, CT - The Knights of Columbus announced
today that it set new records for charitable giving and
volunteer service hours in 2006.
The results of the Order's Annual Survey of Fraternal
Activity for the year ending December 31, 2006 show that total
contributions to charity at all levels
reached $143,816,004 - exceeding
the previous year's total by more than $4 million. The
figure includes $35,133,393 donated by the Supreme
Council, and $108,682,611 in charitable donations from
state and local councils, Fourth Degree assemblies, and
squire circles.
The survey also shows that the reported number of volunteer
hours by Knights for charitable causes grew
to 68,270,432 hours, up more than
4 million hours from 2005. There were 393,807 Knights of
Columbus blood donors during the year, and Knights made
more than 6 million visits to the sick and bereaved.
The volunteer efforts were spearheaded by the Knights
continued commitment to the Gulf States region affected
by hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005. Shortly after
hurricanes, the Knights donated more than $10 million to
relief efforts, and donations of money and time continued
throughout 2006.
Cumulative figures show that during the past decade, the
Knights of Columbus has donated nearly $1.25 billion to
charity, and provided in excess of 593 million hours of
volunteer service in support of charitable causes.
The Knights of Columbus is the world's largest lay
Catholic organization, with 1.7 million members in the
United States, Canada, the Philippines, Mexico, Central
America, and Poland.

Dear
Knights and Ladies,
I
am in charge of packing up Serra House and
moving it to storage. It should be a

on 1212 East Oakey. There
will eventually be a new Serra House, but until then we

like to help us. We are seeking
volunteers to help pack up the house on Saturday, June 9th,

There is not any real heavy lifting involved.
I have carts and dollies that can be used.
Most of the items in the house are just being packed and
moved to the living room or main chapel. The
following week I have movers coming in to actually put
the items on the trucks and move them to storage.
The packing day at Serra House is simply that, packing
items into boxes, making lists of the items in the boxes
and then labeling them and sealing the boxes. We
will work in teams, led by the Seminarians (for example:
one group will focus on linens, another group will focus
on kitchen items, and another group will focus on the
Chapel - etc.) The plan is as follows.
Saturday June 9th
7:30 AM: Last mass in
Chapel at Serra House. (Either Fr. Tony or the
Bishop presiding not confirmed yet)
8:00 AM:
Breakfast: - Hosted by Seminarians
8:30 AM: Teams
assigned to packing duties
12:00 Noon: Lunch provided by
Seminarians
12:30 PM:
Continue Packing
3:00 PM:
Estimated time of completion of packing up house
Sunday, June 10th
8:30 AM:
Continue packing if needed. I think if we have
enough volunteers the day before, we wont need to
do anything on Sunday.
Anyone interested can reply to me at jtaharrington@aol.com
. I am asking people to respond by May 25th, 2007.
I can be reached at 702-217-4231.

Patrick Wainscott must withdraw from
candidacy
Worthy
Knights of Nevada, During the last two years as State
Membership Dir. I have met many men who exemplify
why we are called Knights. The activities
and support we give to others is wonderful. My
Council's resolution of support for me to run for State
office was done so I could continue to
help strengthen our State. However, as
many of you know, my fathers health has been an issue in
my life this spring and it appears this is not going to
change for now.
Regretfully, I must withdraw from the
candidacy for State Treasurer.
As time permits, I
will continue to be active next year
through out our State.
I hope to see everyone at the State Convention. 60
days left in our Columbian Year.
Lets work together and finish strong on Membership.

Article on Dr. Kussman's congressional testimony
for use in newsletters
The article below is the recent testimony of Dr.
Kussman on the VHS budget. Dr. Kussman is the
current acting Under Secretary for Health at the VA and
will be nominated to the position as Under Secretary of
Health for 4 year termthis includes the VAVS
program. He retired from the Army in 2000 as a
Brigadier General.
This is important testimony re: the adequacy of the
proposed 2008 budget. He also addresses critical
initiatives and programs to deal with returning OIF/OEF
veterans, especially the severely wounded----what you ar
NOT hearing from the media.
It is important that we ensure our KofC veterans get the
correct information, not the very slanted, often
incorrect information fed by the media.

Dr. Kussman Tells Congress That
VAs Proposed 2008 Budget
Provides Sufficient Funding to Meet Veterans Health
Care Needs
WASHINGTON VAs proposed $36.6 billion budget
for medical care for 2008 will continue to provide
timely, world class health care to a growing number of
veterans who need it the most -- including expanded
services for veterans returning from Operation Iraqi
Freedom (OIF) and Operation Enduring Freedom (OEF) --
Acting Under Secretary Dr. Michael J. Kussman said in
recent testimony before two Congressional subcommittees.
In testimony March 6 before the House Appropriations
Subcommittee on Military Construction and on Feb. 14
before the Veterans Affairs Subcommittee on Health, Dr.
Kussman said the VA budget for medical care for 2008 is
comprised of $27.2 billion for medical services, $3.4
billion for administration, $3.6 billion for medical
facilities. An additional $2.4 billion in revenues will
come from medical care collections.
Dr. Kussman emphasized that the proposed budget provides
sufficient funding and resources to enable VA to provide
world-class care to those with service-connected
disabilities, those with lower incomes and those with
special care needs and for OIF and OEF veterans.
"We will continue to ensure that every seriously
injured or ill serviceman or woman returning from combat
in Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom
receives treatment they need in a timely way," Dr.
Kussman said
He also said he wanted to dispel reports that VA is being
"overwhelmed" by the number of veterans
returning from Iraq or Afghanistan coming to it for care.
"That is not correct," Dr. Kussman said. In
2008, VHA expects to treat about 263,000 veterans from
the global war on terror, which represents only a small
fraction of its anticipated total of 5.8 million
patients.
He said the funds requested in the fiscal 2008 budget for
medical care for veterans will help VA to ensure that
service members transition from active duty to
civilian life is as smooth and seamless as possible.
Dr. Kussman told members of Congress that VA has launched
a far-reaching outreach initiative to ensure separating
combat veterans know about the benefits and services
available to them.
"VA has made a special effort to work with National
Guard and reserve units to reach transitioning service
members at demobilization sites and has trained recently
discharged veterans to serve as National Guard bureau
liaisons in every state to assist their fellow combat
veterans," Dr. Kussman said.
Each VA medical center has an employee responsible for
coordinating activities locally and to ensure the health
care needs of returning service members are met. In an
effort to assist wounded military members and their
families, VA has placed workers at key military hospitals
where severely injured service members from Iraq and
Afghanistan are frequently sent for care. Under this
program, VA staff provides assistance at 10 military
treatment facilities around the country.
Dr. Kussman said the budget also includes funding to
increase VHA services to severely injured service members
from Iraq and Afghanistan. VA has increased services at
its four polytrauma centers in Minneapolis, Palo Alto,
Richmond, and Tampa to encompass additional specialty
services to treat patients for multiple complex injuries.
VAs efforts are being expanded to 17 additional
polytrauma network sites and clinic support teams around
the country, providing state-of-the-art treatment that is
closer to injured veterans homes.
"Furthermore, we established a polytrauma call
center in February 2006 to assist the families of our
most seriously injured combat veterans and service
members," Dr. Kussman said. "The call center
operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week to answer
clinical, administrative, and benefit inquiries from
polytrauma patients and family members."
Dr. Kussman also noted that VA has significantly enhanced
its counseling and other medical services for recently
discharged veterans suffering from mental health
disorders, including post-traumatic stress disorder
(PTSD). He said the budget request includes nearly $3
billion to improve access to VA mental health services
throughout the nation.
"We have launched new programs, including dozens of
new mental health teams based in VA medical facilities
focused on early identification and management of
stress-related disorders, and we will recruit 100 combat
veterans as counselors to provide briefings to
transitioning service members regarding military-related
readjustment needs," Dr. Kussman said.

Congratulations to these winners of this year's Free
Throw competition. Several age groups were decided
by one or two shots. The most important thing, however,
is that the Knights provided several of our community's
children a positive experience. We had several return
contestants, a true sign that our event has made a
tremendous impact. Thanks to all the Brothers who
volunteered their time during the Southern Nevada portion
of the state event.
It was my first year hosting the competition, and I was
amazed at the support from my Brothers. Another
thank you goes out to the Brothers in the Northern cities
and their efforts in efficiently sending in their
results.
Letters will be mailed out this week inviting each
champion to the annual state convention at Sam's Town in
Las Vegas for a brief awards ceremony. Each child
will receive a trophy and a Knights of Columbus
basketball. Four of the 10 champions are from Northern
Nevada, and District Deputy No. 1 Chuck Baker will handle
getting the awards to these children. Thanks to
everyone for their contributions and I looked forward to
working with everyone in the future. Vivat

Divine Mercy Message
Divine
Mercy Message and Devotion
The
message of the Divine Mercy is simple. It is that God
loves us, all of us. And, he wants us to recognize
that His mercy is greater than our sins, so that we
will call upon Him with trust, recieve His mercy , and
let it flow through us to others. Thus, all will come to
share His joy.
The Divine Mercy Message is one we call to mind simply by
remembering ABC:
A - Ask for His mercy. God wants us to approach Him in
prayer constantly, repenting of our sins and asking Him
to pour his mercy out upon us and upon the whole world.
B- Be merciful. God wants us to recieve His mercy
and let it flow through us to others. He wants us to
extend love and forgivness to others just as He does to
us
C- Completely trust in Jesus. God wants us to
know that the graces of His mercy are dependent upon our
trust. The more we trust in Jesus, the more we will
recieve.
This message and devotion to Jesus as the Divine Mercy is
based on the writings of Saint Faustina Kowalska.

Memo: Protect our Children class set for March 31
Brother Knights and council activity directors,
Several councils throughout the state have
recently eliminated or altered annual events in
correspondence with the dioceses Protect Our
Children regulations.
The diocese requires all Knights, or
adults from any group, that are working with children to
be certified a process that involves finger
printing and completing a two hour class.
I coordinated with Liz Tamburrt
from Bishop Pepes office and scheduled a class for
all Knights on March 31 from 1 to 3 p.m. at Holy Family
on Mountain Vista Road and Harmon Avenue. There will be
no fee for the course!
As several of you know, we have struggled
since the fall in lining up a class. I encourage all
Knights to attend and receive the proper training so we
can continue servicing our parishs youth.
The diocese has a no toleration policy
when it comes to working with children and this is a
perfect time for everyone to get certified.
Any Brother Knights or Ladies
planning to attend the Protect Our Children
class on March 31 at Holy Family needs to pre-register
online.
Visit http://www.virtus.org and navigate through
the site. Its an easy procedure.
Make sure to mark that youll
be attending the course
at Holy Family.
Also, email State Youth Director Ray
Brewer at ray.brewer@hbcpub.com and confirm youll be attending.
I need to have an official figure to the Bishops
office by March 26.
As several of you know, the Diocese of Las Vegas requires
anyone working with children to be certified through the
Virtus Program. Its crucial that all Knights
receive this training so we can proceed with our annual
slate of activities designed to help our churchs
youth.
The class wont be limited to members of the
order. Several non-Knights from Holy Family will
also attend and I encourage everyone to invite members
from your church who need to be certified.
Vivat Jesus!

UNLV College Council
Be
a charter member of the first college council in
Nevada. We are forming a new council at St
Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman Center and are looking for
current Knights to transfer into this council to provide
stability and guidance to the council.
Father Albert (a 3rd degree Knight) has requested that we
establish a council at St Thomas Aquinas Catholic Newman
Center. There are currently 8 members of this
community who are Knights and 7 more who are
awaiting their first degree. The Financial
Secretary has been identified and we are looking for a
few Knights who are close to UNLV who would be willing to
transfer into this council. These Knights function
would be to provide guidance and support to the
students. I have a current student who is willing
to be the charter Grand Knight and others who will
step forward to fill the officer positions.
There will be a meeting on March 20th at 7p.m. at
the Newman Center 4576 Brussels Street, Las Vegas,
NV 89119. Farther Albert and the students hope is
to charter this council on March 29th, the 125
anniversary of the Knights. Lets not disappoint
them and pull together to make this happen.

Soccer shoot, Poster contest, Free throw
Grand
Knights, council program directors and brother knights,
'Say No To Drugs' poster Contest
We are definitely working with some talented children.
Several councils submitted entries this weekend at a
district meeting in Las Vegas for our annual 'Say No To
Drugs' poster contest and after reviewing the artwork one
thing is apparent -- it's going to be difficult picking a
winner.
The deadline for this contest will be Jan. 31 and entries
need to be mailed to my house: 47 Voltaire Avenue,
Henderson, NV 89002.
Councils will be notified in the second week of February
of the winners and awards will be quickly distributed.
I'm available to come to masses, meetings or Catholic
schools to present awards. Also, each child who
participated will receive a certificate (those will be
mailed to each council).
Winning posters will be forwarded to supreme.
Soccer Shoot
Just in its second year, the soccer shoot came and went
with little fanfare. Councils that hosted this contest
need to be recognized for their efforts in organizing an
event we are still trying to master.
Regretfully, there will be no district or state
competition this year. Knights in several councils,
especially in Southern Nevada, had to put activities on
hold for parts of the fall as the ins and outs of the
'Protect Our Children' program were interrupted. This
calls for anyone that works with children to attend an
awareness class and be fingerprinted.
We are currently working on getting several brothers
through this program, and we recently learned that we can
move forward with activities as long as a child's parent
is present.
State winners for the soccer shoot will be determined by
performances in the council event. Like the poster
contest, please send my your tally sheets so we can
determine winners in each division. I will also accept
email. Trophies will be mailed to each council and I'm
also available to present awards at mass, meeting and
Catholic schools.
Free Throw Contest
Lastly, all councils should have ordered free throw
contests kits. If not, I have bits and pieces in my
garage that can be distributed. Councils should have
competitions in January. We are looking at holding
district in February and state in March. As in year's
past, results from Northern Nevada will be compared to
the state event for winners.
It's best to contact me via email at ray.brewer@hbcpub.com or RaymondBrewer@Yahoo.com
. My numbers are as follows: 702-990-2662 (work) or
702-812-4926 (home).
