As most Grand Knights and Council officers know, it takes money to operate a Council. A new council doesn't have any money in the bank, except for a $200 gift from Supreme. As a new Council, a gift of money and/or items can always be used. Please consider this Nevada Tradition for new councils, at your next Council business meeting.

Brothers,

I am most pleased to announce that 26 new brothers and most probably a  new council was formed last night at St. Rose Lima parish in Reno.    The first degree ceremony was held at the parish by council 4997.

Thanks to State Treasurer, Peter Herborn and District Deputy, Ed Strickland and all the other brother who attended and help make this "new council" a reality.

The roundtable was in existence for less than 6 months and all of the paper work, thanks to Russ Fromhurtz, should be at Supreme before the close of the fraternal year.

My thanks to my brothers at council 4997 for the overwhelming support this past month in the recruitment and degree phase of getting new council on its feet!

Jim Kelly

Knights of Columbus ask to intervene in Pledge of Allegiance case
Defendant-intervenors include individual Knights and their families

(SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA) < Eight Knights of Columbus families in the
Sacramento area and the Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus have
asked a federal court for leave to intervene in a new lawsuit challenging
the constitutionality of the words ³under God² in the Pledge of Allegiance.
All are represented by The Becket Fund for Religious Liberty, a Washington,
D.C. public interest law firm that specializes in cases involving the free
exercise of religion.

The Knights of Columbus played a key role in persuading Congress to pass
legislation adding the words ³under God² to the Pledge in 1954.  Knights
throughout the U.S. began reciting the Pledge that way in 1951, after the
Board of Directors adopted a resolution mandating that the new pledge be
formally recited in each of the Orderıs 750 Fourth Degree assemblies.  The
Supreme Council adopted a resolution urging Congress to modify the Pledge
in 1952, and after President Eisenhower signed the bill on Flag Day, 1954,
he wrote a letter to Supreme Knight Luke Hart acknowledging the Knightsı
role ³in the movement to have the words Ounder Godı added to our Pledge of
Allegiance.²

The latest court challenge to the Pledge was filed by California physician
and lawyer Michael Newdow in January 2005.  Last year, the U.S. Supreme
Court threw out an earlier Newdow lawsuit on the Pledge on grounds that he
did not have custody of the child on whose behalf he filed the action.
This time, he has eight co-plaintiffs and has sued Congress, the United
States, the State of California, and five school districts.

In todayıs filing, the defendant-intervenors ³respectfully request
permission to intervene in this case to protect their substantial interest
in defending . . . the constitutionality of the Pledge of Allegiance that
is recited daily in Californiaıs public schools.²

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson said that direct intervention in the case
³will enable the Knights of Columbus to join the fight inside the
courtroom, and thus help insure that Ounder Godı remains in the Pledge
where it belongs.²  The full text of the legal documents can be found on
both the Knights of Columbus and Becket Fund websites.

Re: Supreme Chaplain

I am pleased to announce the election of Bridgeport (CT) Bishop William E. Lori as the new Supreme Chaplain of the Knights of Columbus. The action was taken by the Board of Directors at its meeting in Montreal on April 2, but because of the death of Pope John Paul lithe same day, we decided to delay a public announcement until after the Holy Father’s funeral.

Bishop Thomas V. Daily, who has served as Supreme Chaplain since 1987, decided to retire earlier this year and has now been named Supreme Chaplain Emeritus. He is a dear friend, and we are enormously grateful for his long service as our chaplain. He will continue to be a familiar and welcome presence at many of our meetings and conventions.

Bishop Lon has been a Knight for nearly 20 years, and served as DC State Chaplain while he was secretary and theologian to Cardinal Hickey, and later, auxiliary bishop of Washington. He is an enthusiastic Knight and widely respected bishop, and we’ve been privileged to work closely with him most recently in the establishment of Villa Maria Guadalupe, the new international retreat center run by the Sisters of Life in Stamford, Connecticut. We are very fortunate indeed to have him as our new Supreme Chaplain.

Knights of Columbus to Donate $300,000 for Inner-City Catholic Schools

For release:
1:30 pm, March 29, 2005

Contact:
Patrick Korten (203) 752-4474
Andrew Walther (203) 752-4253

(PHILADELPHIA, PA) — With inner-city Catholic schools under enormous financial pressure and many in danger of closing, the Knights of Columbus will donate $300,000 to the National Catholic Education Association (NCEA) to find ways to strengthen the solvency of these schools and give future generations the chance to get a quality education.

At a news conference at the 2005 NCEA convention in Philadelphia, Knights of Columbus CEO Carl Anderson announced the grant of $300,000 over the next three years from the Father Michael J. McGivney Fund for New Initiatives in Catholic Education.

The grant will fund the development of new initiatives to strengthen Catholic inner-city schools. Established 25 years ago, the McGivney fund supports Catholic education.

Though enrollment at Catholic schools declined sharply during between the 1960s and 1990s, enrollment has stabilized with more than 2.4 million students now attending nearly 7,800 Catholic elementary, middle, and high schools. 44.2 percent of those schools are located in urban and inner-city areas. While 173 Catholic schools closed last year, 37 new schools were opened, and 2,543 Catholic schools now have a waiting list for admissions.

"Research shows that these schools have done an outstanding job in educating young people – many of whom would never have had the chance to succeed in life were not for the academic and moral education instilled in them in their Catholic schools," Anderson said. "Saving these schools translates into saving productive lives."

The Knights of Columbus is the world’s largest Catholic lay organization with nearly 1.7 million members. The organization annually gives more than $130 million to charitable causes and last year gave more than $9 million to Catholic schools. The NCEA is the largest private, professional education association in the world. It represents more than 200,000 educators serving 7.6 million students at all education levels.

Kansas Knights of Columbus Join Fight for Passage of Marriage Amendment:
Supreme Office Donates $100,000 to Effort

(NEW HAVEN, CT) The Knights of Columbus, the worldıs largest lay Catholic
organization, has given its full support to the campaign to amend the
Kansas state constitution to preserve marriage as ³constituted by one man
and one woman only.²  The proposed amendment will be the subject of a
statewide vote on April 5, 2005.

The State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus in Kansas, Tom Rottinghaus,
called on all members of the Order and their families to become actively
involved in the effort to pass the amendment.  Kansas Knights have been
supporting and promoting the Kansas Marriage Amendment in a variety of
ways, including passing out flyers and yard signs, and offering to insert
flyers in church bulletins throughout the state.

The Supreme Council of the Knights of Columbus, headquartered in New Haven,
Connecticut, recently sent a donation of $100,000 to Archbishop Joseph F.
Naumann of Kansas City to be used in a public education campaign in support
of the marriage amendment. Archbishop Naumann said that ³This extraordinary
contribution by the Knights of Columbus will be of great assistance to the
ecumenical and inter-faith efforts in Kansas to give constitutional
protection to marriage between a man and a woman.²

Supreme Knight Carl A. Anderson noted that the Knights of Columbus
has been active in efforts to protect traditional marriage throughout the
United States and Canada, working closely with Catholic bishops in both
countries.  The organization joined the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops
last summer in backing the proposed Federal Marriage Amendment then before
the U.S. Senate, and Knights in Canada are now heavily involved in the
fight to defeat legislation in the Canadian Parliament that would legalize
same-sex marriage there.  In January, in conjunction with the Canadian
Conference of Catholic Bishops, the Knights of Columbus printed and
distributed two million postcards for use by Canadian citizens in
expressing their opposition to the same-sex marriage bill to their Members
of Parliament.

Last year, voters in 13 states approved state constitutional
amendments similar to the Kansas amendment, and a total of 17 states now
have such provisions in their constitutions.

Worthy State Deputy,
Nevada State Legislature began work on Monday, February 7th, and already there is a Bill that I will be following.  It is not to early to have our brother Knights let their legislature know where we stand on the issue.

A.B. 6    Prohibits imposition of sentence of death upon a person for a crime committed while person was under age of 18.

Introduced by Assemblywoman Giunchigliani. Dem Asm. Dist. 9  Las Vegas
Referred to the Assembly Judiciary Committee. Chaired by Bernie. Anderson of Sparks.

Last session we were able to get legislation that prohibited the death penalty for those age 16 and under.  The change proposed in this law changes that law to 18 years and under.  It has always been our hope to be able to eliminate the death penalty altogether.  But here we could at least see to it that some might not be put to death.
Contact your legislator and let him or her know that we support this peace of legislation.   Members of the Order can find out who their legislator is and who sits on this or any committee by logging on to www.leg.state.nv.us/

³The time has come to overturn Roe v. Wade²
Knights of Columbus CEO says decision is wrong on science and law

(NEW HAVEN, CT) < ³The year 2005 will be a pivotal year in the long battle
to replace the culture of death enabled by Roe v. Wade with a culture of
life,² Knights of Columbus CEO Carl A. Anderson said today, on the 32nd
anniversary of the Supreme Court decision.  ³Roe has long been recognized
as fundamentally flawed as a matter of constitutional law, even by abortion
proponents.  And today, with the benefit of three decades of scientific
research in human biology, it is readily apparent to all that its Oscienceı
was equally flawed.²

³In 1973, the court majority declared that it Oneed not resolve the
difficult question of when life begins,ı because there was a Owide
divergence of thinking on this most sensitive and difficult question.ı  In
fact, there was little doubt at all about when life begins in 1973, and
there is no doubt whatsoever today,² Anderson declared.  ³Each personıs
life begins at conception, and using modern technology we can view every
moment of the earliest development of the human child.  Today, doctors
routinely enable the long-term survival of premature children who are
delivered well before the moment of Oviabilityı described in Roe.²

³Together, the decisions in Roe and Dred Scott form a unique category
that stands apart from every other Supreme Court decision in our nationıs
history.  Each considered the question of whether a particular category of
human beings were Opersonsı entitled to the protection of the law.  And in
each case, the court issued a decision that was profoundly and tragically
wrong, and which resulted in horrendous injustice.  It took a civil war to
undo the injustice of Dred Scott.  Today, we can undo the injustice of Roe
v. Wade simply by recognizing that new scientific knowledge in this area
mandates a fresh look at the issue by the courts.  For more than three
decades, the courts have been struggling to sustain an increasingly
untenable string of legal precedents based on Roe,² Anderson said.  ³The
time has come for the court to overturn Roe v. Wade and return the
responsibility for deciding the issue to the people and their elected
representatives,² he concluded.
